Microhubs as the future of last-mile logistics

The EIT UM Marketplace released a publication on the growing role of microhubs in urban logistics, highlighting their potential to make last-mile delivery more sustainable and efficient across European cities, writes Sara Mecatti.

Urban logistics accounts for over 25% of transport-related emissions, driven by factors such as congestion and the use of high-emission vehicles. The article outlines how microhubs – small urban spaces where goods are transferred from larger vehicles to low-emission alternatives like cargo bikes – are being developed to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. These hubs often provide services such as vehicle charging, fleet sharing, parking, and goods consolidation.

The article clarifies that the term “microhub” is sometimes misused and differentiates it from related concepts like delivery lockers or urban consolidation centres. It also notes the importance of public-private cooperation and effective use of urban space to enable the rollout of microhubs, especially in densely populated areas.

Examples from three Horizon Europe projects are presented:

  • In Logroño (ES), as part of the DECARBOMILE project, a microhub located in the San Blas Market is used for transferring goods to electric cargo bikes, with additional functions such as waste consolidation and community deliveries under development.
  • Bologna’s (IT) pilot, under the URBANE project, combines microhub lockers with light electric delivery vehicles to manage B2B shipments, supported by digital tools to increase efficiency.
  • In Athens (GR), the GREEN-LOG project is testing micro-consolidation centres and mobile depots, using a shared electric vehicle and smart parcel lockers to streamline urban deliveries.

These pilots demonstrate how microhubs are being applied in different urban contexts, aiming to reduce emissions, optimise logistics, and enhance the use of public space.
